Remember Pennyworth, the new Batman-inspired series that reimagines Bruce Wayne’s butler Alfred Pennyworth as a James Bond-like head of security for Thomas Wayne in the 1960s? Well, the series ended up being a hit, and Epix has just announced that Pennyworth will be returning for a second season of political intrigue and aristocratic action.
“Pennyworth has been a big hit for us, embraced by critics and fans alike,” Epix president Michael Wright told Collider of the decision to renew the show. “It was the highest-performing original series ever to premiere on Epix, more than doubling the viewership of the shows that came before it. [Show creators] Bruno Heller, Danny Cannon, and WBTV have delivered a brilliant, must-watch series. We can’t wait to work with this phenomenal cast and creative team on another exciting season.”
Season one saw Alfred and Thomas come up against the Raven Society, an underground group of fascists who are planning to overthrow the British government and kidnap the Queen of England. To complicate things, Alfred’s father is a high-ranking member of the Raven Society who personally tries to assassinate the queen. He’s of course thwarted by his son, who *possibly* killed his old man in the first season finale. Oh, and Alfred and the queen also have a bit of a romance thing going on after he saves her life. You know, we’re starting to see what Batman sees in this guy!
No word yet on when Pennyworth season two will air, but if it follows the path of season one, we should expect to see it on Epix next summer.
