His greatest Allied opponent, the Canadian Roy Brown (Don Stroud), has little use for the supposed dignity and honor of war. He just wants to shoot down Germans, especially the baron and his new tri-plane. The baron's superiors want the famous pilot to retire to a safer position, but he refuses, and eventually meets Brown in a deadly dogfight.

When the Mississippi mobsters finally show up, Jackson must enlist the help of his streetwise brother, Goldy (Gregory Hines), to save the girl.

One day, Chino and his fellow gang members kidnap the head of the Stompers, Darryl (Jody McCrea), and his girlfriend, Chris (Chris Noel). After a heavy beating, the cyclists abandon Darryl but take Chris with them to Mexico. While Chris faces threats of abuse, Darryl teams up with Smiley (Jock Mahoney), an aging ex-Stomper, for a final showdown with the Souls.

But Robles, a Mexican, seethes over the town's racism, and is warned by kindly nurse Estella (Katy Jurado) that without his gun, he would not last very long. That theory is put to the test when the new sheriff injures his wrist fighting with Ed Bannister (Peter Whitney), who upon learning about it, challenges Robles to a duel.

An alcoholic philosophizer (Thomas Mitchell), a lady of ill repute (Claire Trevor) and a timid liquor salesman (Donald Meek) are among the motley crew of travelers who must contend with an escaped outlaw, the Ringo Kid (John Wayne), and the ever-present threat of an Apache attack as they make their way across the Wild West.

The owner of Chip's ranch has died and left Matt his land, thinking the troubled drifter may be his long-estranged son. Initially, Matt plans on selling the ranch, but then decides to keep it, hoping to impress his ex-lover, Janet (Terry Moore). The ranch, however, turns out to be in foreclosure, forcing Matt and Chip to come up with a plan to pay off their debt to the bank.
