The folks at Paramount and Hasbro must have a lot of faith in the G.I. Joe character Snake Eyes, because the studio has already greenlit a sequel to his solo film Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins. If you’re racking your brain trying to remember if you ever saw a Snake Eyes movie, you can stop straining, because the film hasn’t even been released yet.
Snakes Eyes just wrapped filming in February and is slated to arrive in theaters this October, so no one knows if the movie will be a success. Heck, at this point no one even knows if any movie will be successful this October, as it all depends on how the coronavirus crisis plays out and if people are even able to go to movie theaters again by then. But the point is that Paramount and Hasbro are so confident in Snake Eyes‘ franchise potential that they’ve already begun work on a follow-up. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studios have enlisted new screenwriters Anna Waterhouse and Joe Shrapnel (how fitting) to pen the second Snake Eyes movie, while one of the first film’s producers, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, will return to produce.
There’s no word yet on what the plot of the new movie will cover, which makes sense considering that we still don’t know how the first Snake Eyes movie will play out. We assume that star Henry Golding will return as the titular ninja, but beyond that, we’re in 100 percent shrug emoji territory. Snake Eyes has always seemed to us like an odd choice to lead a film — let alone a franchise — since the character traditionally doesn’t speak. But the studio must know something we don’t because Snake Eyes is set to lead the way for G.I. Joe’s on-screen reboot effort. And to that, we say, Yo Joe!
