Vikings is coming to an end next year after the conclusion of season 6, but the series will live on… in Valhalla. No, seriously, a Vikings sequel series is coming and it’s called Vikings: Valhalla.
The new series will air on Netflix rather than the History channel, and will take place around 100 years after the first series. That means it’s extremely unlikely that any current or former Vikings characters will feature on the new series, but given the show’s penchant for frequently killing off its main characters, that’s probably not that big of a deal. Despite the sequel series’ title, Vikings: Valhalla will not actually be about the glorious afterlife of Norse myth, but rather will tell new dramatized accounts of the next generation of Viking heroes from yesteryear, including Leif Erikson, Freydis, Harald Harada, and William the Conqueror.
“Vikings: Valhalla promises to be everything that fans love about the franchise: heart-pounding, unstoppable action rooted in rich characters and dramatic storytelling that shines the light on family, loyalty and power,” Channing Dungey, vice president of original series for Netflix, said in a statement, according to Variety. “We are thrilled to bring the next iteration of the Vikings saga to life with Michael Hirst, Jeb Stuart, Morgan O’Sullivan, and MGM Television.”
There’s no word yet on when this new Vikings series will premiere, but odds are it won’t be for some time. Season 6 of Vikings is set to kick off next month, but is not expected to wrap up its 20-episode run until late next year. It seems highly unlikely that we’ll see the sequel series before its predecessor finishes, which probably means we’re looking at a 2021 premiere date at the earliest.
