Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the fan-favorite spy-fi series that’s been going strong since the early days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will soon be coming to an end.
According to Variety, the curtain is set to close on the series after next summer’s seventh season. The series premiered back in 2013, the year after The Avengers hit theaters, and was co-created by that film’s director, Joss Whedon. The show has had its ups and downs since then, but it has managed to stave off cancelation all this time — something that can’t be said of most Marvel series.
The end of the series also marks the end of an era for Marvel TV shows. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., like Netflix’s various Marvel series, always had a strange and tenuous relationship with their film counterparts. While technically part of the same universe, they often didn’t feel like it, and the relationship was a one-way street. The movies never mentioned the TV shows, while the TV shows — especially in the case of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. — frequently brought up the films. But with Disney now bringing the Fox-owned Marvel properties in-house and launching their own streaming site later this year, the future of Marvel on TV will look much different. Disney already has a number of superhero series greenlit to stream on the upcoming Disney+, and these series will actually star actors from Marvel’s movies, like Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen.
But that’s the future. In the present, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. still has one season to go after its current one, meaning fans of the show don’t have to start the grieving process just yet.
