In case you forgot, Top Gun 2 is currently in production, and it sounds like star Tom Cruise will be taking his propensity for daring stunts further than ever before in the upcoming film.
Jon Hamm, who is co-starring in the film, recently revealed in an interview with Collider that the movie is using some brand new technology to capture aerial stunts that are unlike anything anyone has ever seen. “They’re using some technology on this that is never before seen,” Hamm revealed. “We’re shooting the movie in, I think, 6K. So it’s incredibly hi-def. The aerial footage is mind-blowing. And it’s mostly practical. There’s not a lot of CG. Those guys are really up in planes and getting thrown around in multiple Gs”
Hearing that the effects are mostly practical is awesome, but it isn’t all that shocking. Remember, Cruise literally learned how to pilot and do 360s in a helicopter for the last Mission: Impossible movie, so naturally, he’s going to try and outdo himself for this 30-years-in-the-making sequel.
Hamm also revealed that the sequel will really capture the feel of the 1986 original, thanks in part to its use of identical costumes and sets. “It’s a very strange experience but it’s been a wonderful experience as well. It’s basically getting the whole team back together,” Hamm said. “Unfortunately, [deceased original director] Tony Scott is unavailable, but they’ve achieved a very similar vibe to the first one. I think it’s gonna be, for the people who love the first movie, I think it’s gonna be very interesting to watch. It very much takes the story in a different direction. But I think for the new fans it’s gonna be something very cool, too. I’ve seen some of the footage, it is out of this world.”
In addition to Hamm and Cruise, the film features an ensemble cast including Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris, Glen Powell, and Miles Teller as Goose’s son, Bradley Bradshaw. Val Kilmer is also set to reprise his role as Iceman, making he and Cruise the only stars from the original who are known to appear in the sequel.
Top Gun: Maverick will fly into theaters on July 26, 2020.
