Once inside, leader John Baron (Frank Sinatra) reveals himself as a psychopathic assassin, and he kidnaps the family in order to use their house as his vantage point in his plot to kill the president. Sheriff Tod Shaw (Sterling Hayden) matches wits with the assassin and his gang in an attempt to save the day.

Hoping to create a diversion for Santa Anna's forces, General Sam Houston (Richard Boone) orders Colonel William B. Travis (Laurence Harvey), joined by Colonels Jim Bowie (Richard Widmark) and Davy Crockett (John Wayne), to lead a small, heroic band of American and Texican fighters in a resistance battle at the Alamo mission. The carnage at the Alamo further spurs the Republic of Texas toward freedom.

Pembroke (James Coburn) faces public disgrace and a potential court-martial unless he's able to recapture the fort now held by the power-mad Maj. Ward (Telly Savalas). To help him on this mission, Pembroke enlists a ragtag bunch of condemned men who are promised their freedom should they survive. Despite much internal strife, the group gradually comes together in time for the assault.
