Unconventional and misunderstood, Nick figures out the killer's patterns while wooing both his own sister-in-law, Christine (Susan Sarandon), and the mayor's daughter Bernadette (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio). The police arrest a suspect, but Nick thinks they have the wrong man, so he attempts to find the murderer on his own.

The crooks think they've gotten away with their crime, but they haven't figured on Sabata (Lee Van Cleef), a violent bounty hunter with no scruples and a strong desire for cash. He teams up with both his partner, Banjo (William Berger), and a local bandit named Carrincha (Pedro Sanchez). Sabata's fast draw and quick wits make life hell for the thieves.

Learning of his comrades' demise, Dorsey goes on the lam. Believing her short-term lover was killed by the law, Amanda decides to make the most of having had a liaison with the supposedly deceased desperado by writing a book about him. Much to his confusion, the still-living Dorsey watches as his name becomes legendary.

Eager to collect, a couple of bounty hunters (Robert Webber, Gig Young) track him to a Mexico City bar run by an American expatriate named Bennie (Warren Oates). Bennie denies knowing Garcia and attempts to bring in the head himself after learning from his girlfriend (Isela Vega) that Garcia has died in a car accident.
