Director Roland Emmerich has shown over the years that he really likes to blow stuff up on camera, and he’s taking that love for explosions to the extreme in the latest trailer for Midway.
The new trailer for the Independence Day filmmaker’s WWII epic showcases some impressive aerial battles over the Pacific, while also playing up the drama that led up to the battle. The trailer plays it up as a David vs. Goliath situation where, following the events of Pearl Harbor, a handful of American fighter pilots take on the whole of the Japanese fleet near the Pacific island of Midway. While highlighting the pilots’ bravery, the trailer showcases dogfights, risky bombing runs, and more aerial machine gun fire than we’ve probably ever seen in a movie. We have no idea whether this movie is actually going to be any good, but if nothing else, it sure looks like it’s going to be a spectacle.
In addition to all the bombast, Midway also boasts a pretty nifty cast, with familiar faces like Woody Harrelson, Patrick Wilson, Dennis Quaid, Mandy Moore, Luke Evans, Nick Jonas, Aaron Eckhart, Ed Skrein, and Darren Criss all lending their considerable talents to the film. The movie opens, quite fittingly, this Veteran’s Day weekend on Nov. 8.
