The first trailer has been released for the upcoming Top Gun sequel, and we’re pretty sure Tom Cruise learned how to fly fighter jets for real.
In the decades since the first Top Gun, the actor has become known for performing his own death-defying stunts in his films. In the latest Mission: Impossible movie, he not only learned how to fly a helicopter but also learned how to perform a 360 in the vehicle — an exceedingly dangerous maneuver. And frankly, watching this trailer for Top Gun: Maverick, we’re a little scared for Cruise’s life. We could be wrong, but it looks to us that Cruise is in the cockpit of these jets for real, but even if he’s not, the footage in this trailer is absolutely breathtaking. Take a look.
In addition to the incredible stunts, the new trailer also features loads of nostalgia from the original film; including some shirtless beach sports, barroom karaoke, and an aviator-wearing Maverick racing a plane on a motorcycle. The film sees Maverick 34 years removed from the events of the original Top Gun and still flying planes as a captain in the U.S. Navy. In the trailer, it seems pretty clear that the reason he hasn’t moved on to a higher rank is that he doesn’t want to, but with unmanned drones taking over for real pilots, he may no longer have a choice.
Top Gun: Maverick will fly into theaters on June 26, 2020.
