2016’s Suicide Squad may not have been the critical hit that Warner Bros. was hoping for, but there was one aspect of the film that pretty much everyone seemed to like in Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. Now, Quinn has her own upcoming spinoff film called Birds of Prey, and a new teaser is giving us a glimpse of the insanity we can expect in the movie.
The teaser, which leaked online ahead of its theatrical debut before Warner’s It: Chapter Two, pulls a bait and switch with the audience. As a plethora of red balloons rises up to obscure the Warner Bros. logo and Pennywise’s creepy theme plays, viewers get the impression that It 2 is starting. But then Harley Quinn walks out from the shadows to pop some balloons with her oversized mallet, claiming that she’s “so done with clowns,” a nod to her having moved past her relationship with The Joker. The trailer then features several quick shots of the rest of the rest of the film’s cast of characters: Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco), and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez); along with the villain Black Mask (Ewan McGregor).
In Birds of Prey, Harley teams up with Black Canary and Huntress to protect young Cassandra Cain (a future Batwoman in the comics) after the girl comes into possession of a diamond belonging to criminal kingpin Black Mask, according to Variety. While that synopsis almost makes it seem like Harley is now a hero, we’re guessing she’ll be operating in a very morally gray area throughout the film.
Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) arrives in theaters on Feb. 7, 2020.
