For a long time, it seemed as if the Bad Boys franchise was dead in the water. Bad Boys 2 was released way back in 2003, and since then Michael Bay has become a bit of a punchline, Martin Lawrence has all but disappeared, and even Will Smith’s star has been tarnished by a number of box office bombs. But despite the various forces working against it, Bad Boys for Life is almost here — and Smith and Lawrence are getting all nostalgic just thinking about it.
A new featurette from the upcoming third Bad Boys movie goes behind the scenes to show the film’s two stars reminiscing about their return to the action cop franchise after such a long time away. They also both show some disbelief about just how long it’s been not only since Bad Boys 2, but since the original Bad Boys movie was released back in 1995. At that time, both Lawrence and Smith were starring in their own popular sitcoms, and neither seemed as if they’d be the likeliest candidates to star in a buddy cop action movie. But their chemistry and surprising action chops (especially Smith, who you may have heard went on to have a nice little career as an action star) proved to be a winning formula, which is why the duo have reunited in 2020 for one last go ’round as Miami detectives Mike Lowrey (Smith) and Marcus Burnett).
Take a look at the new featurette below, and do your best to try and not feel super old.
Bad Boys for Life arrives in theaters on Jan. 17.
